From solar power to organic gardens and zero single-use plastics, discover how Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge is committed to sustainable tourism.
Sustainability at Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge
At Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge, we believe luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand. Set on the doorstep of one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots, our lodge operates with a deep sense of responsibility toward the environment and the communities that make this place so special. Our approach is built around protecting nature, supporting local livelihoods, and creating a more thoughtful travel experience for every guest.
Solar Energy
Our lodge runs primarily on solar energy, supported by battery storage systems that provide reliable power throughout the day and night. This reduces dependence on diesel generators, helping to keep the air cleaner and the forest environment quieter for both guests and wildlife. We also use solar thermal systems to heat water for showers and kitchen use, further reducing our environmental footprint.
Organic Gardens
Our kitchen garden supplies a significant share of the fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits used in our restaurant. Everything is grown organically, without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers that could affect the surrounding ecosystem. This not only supports healthier, fresher meals for our guests, but also reflects our commitment to working in harmony with nature. Guests are welcome to tour the garden and experience this part of the lodge firsthand.
Zero Single-Use Plastics
We are committed to reducing waste by eliminating single-use plastics from our day-to-day operations. Water is served in reusable glass bottles, toiletries are provided in refillable dispensers, and takeaway lunch boxes for trekking days are made from biodegradable materials. These small but deliberate choices help us reduce pollution and protect the natural beauty of the area.
Community Employment
More than 70 percent of our staff come from communities within a 10-kilometre radius of the lodge. We are proud to provide training, fair wages, and opportunities for growth and career development. By creating meaningful local employment, tourism becomes a shared benefit, and conservation becomes something communities are empowered to support and sustain.
Reforestation Programme
We have partnered with local communities to plant indigenous trees on degraded land adjacent to Bwindi. This initiative helps restore natural habitats, create wildlife corridors, and capture carbon, while also providing long-term benefits such as sustainable sources of timber and fruit for local families. It is one of the ways we invest in the future of both the environment and the people who depend on it.
What Guests Can Do
Sustainability is a shared journey, and every guest can play a part. We encourage visitors to carry reusable water bottles, follow trekking guidelines carefully to minimise disturbance to wildlife, and consider offsetting the carbon emissions from their flights. Even small actions can make a meaningful difference and help preserve this extraordinary destination for generations to come.
