Packing the right gear can make the difference between an incredible trek and a miserable one. Here's everything you need to bring for gorilla trekking in Bwindi.
Gorilla trekking through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, but the forest earns its name — it's dense, steep, and often wet. Proper preparation is essential. Here's your complete packing guide.
## Footwear
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are non-negotiable. The terrain is muddy, steep, and slippery. Break in your boots before your trip — blisters in the forest are no fun. Some trekkers also bring gaiters to keep mud and ants out.
## Clothing
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers to protect against stinging nettles, thorns, and insects. Choose moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabrics in neutral colours (green, brown, khaki). Bring a lightweight waterproof rain jacket — rain can arrive without warning at any time of year.
## Hand Protection
Garden gloves are a must. You'll be grabbing onto vegetation, vines, and branches to pull yourself up steep slopes. Thorns are common, and gloves save your hands.
## Water and Food
Carry at least 2–3 litres of water. Treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas are. Pack energy bars, nuts, fruit, and a packed lunch (your lodge can prepare this).
## Camera Gear
Bring your best camera with a fast lens — the forest canopy makes it quite dark. Flash photography is strictly prohibited as it disturbs the gorillas. A 70–200mm lens is ideal for close-up shots while maintaining the required 7-metre distance.
## Other Essentials
- Insect repellent (DEET-based recommended)
- Sunscreen for the approach and clearing areas
- A small daypack to carry everything
- Cash for tipping your porter ($10–20 recommended)
- Your gorilla trekking permit (physical or digital copy)
## Pro Tips
Hire a porter at the trailhead ($15–20). They carry your bag, help you on steep sections, and the fee directly supports local employment. It's one of the best investments you'll make on the trek.
